How long has ASE been designing metal sealing solutions?”
We began designing and manufacturing metal seals and sealing systems in 1971. Since then we have grown to become a global leader of engineered metal sealing solutions. We are headquartered in Orange, Connecticut USA where we have our primary manufacturing and engineering center. We also have a manufacturing facility in Taipei, Taiwan and sales offices in Antwerpen Belgium.

What are your largest and smallest metal seals?”
The size and scope of an application envelope is not an obstacle for ASE. We have the experience and knowledge in the designing of metal sealing solutions for equipment and systems regardless of the size, shape or complexity of the project. Our largest seals are for the nuclear energy industry for which we have designed and manufactured metal seals up to 250.0 inches / 6.35 meters in diameter. Our smallest metal seals are for use in the semi conductor and vacuum industries that measure as small as .187 inch /4.75 millimeters in diameter.

What is the average length of the design period?”
Each customer’s project is different. However, we have a reputation for working swiftly to meet or exceed our customers’ timetables. The average design period is four-to-eight weeks up to 15 months, depending on the project. For instance, working with a major engine OEM in the automotive industry, our engineering team designed and developed a beta and alpha sealing system in just nine months and introduced it to the production line in 15 months. Our product provided the solution for our customer with the added benefit of increasing engine performance while maintaining current fuel efficiency.

What is the project development cycle?”
A seal design project typically starts with an application review. It takes place at the customer’s facility or is conducted through a conference call or Web meeting between an ASE sales engineer and the customer’s design or project engineer. After the initial project review, ASE will present a design proposal with one or multiple design options. The design options are then presented to the customer with a description of the seal or sealing system together with the recommended mating hardware geometry and tolerances for evaluation and critique by the customer. After the customer’s approval of the ASE-proposed sealing concept we prepare a formal technical and commercial proposal that includes a detailed description of the recommended product, price, and delivery of the product; and if applicable, tooling or gauging required for the application.
